Initial Short Film Research

We researched, as a class, three short films. They were 'Black Hole', 'Strangers' and 'What's Virgin Mean'. We analysed them, and I have wrote about them below with an embedded version of each film.

The Black Hole

What Was Good?
I think that one of the most powerful aspects of the short was the audio. The way they adapted the sound of the photocopier is really well-done, as just a normal everyday sound has become the main sound representing creepiness in the short. Furthermore, increasing the creepy vibe of the film, the lighting in dull and blue/grey, which represents a negative mood.

What Appealed to the Audience?
Factors such as bits of horror aspects and strong tension will attract the audience. People that are interested in creepy films with high tension will like it, and the whole symbol of loneliness shown will attract a group of viewers, too.

What is the Target Audience?
The target audience for this film is horror fans and people interested in supernatural or mysterious events. The unexpected piece of paper with a black spot printed on is a symbol of mystery, and the fact it creates a hole through things is the supernatural side of things; being spooky and unexplainable.

Strangers

What Was Good?
In my opinion, the created aura of awkward tension between the two characters at the beginning is very active and draws in the viewer. The way it is underground and dark enhance this, and being on a train enhances it further because there's no way out. I think the plot is very engaging as it shows two 'hostilities' fighting a common enemy together. It is unique and kind of teaches you something.

What Appealed to the Audience?
The two characters at the beginning shooting each other with hateful glares changes into them getting along. The tension created between them, especially when the Nazis come in, is very effective and engages the viewer. I think that is the main attraction to the viewers.

What is the Target Audience?
People who are interested in political hostilities or team work. Uniting together to fight a more powerful threat, a bit like Britain and France in the Crimean war against Russia. People that are grabbed by that sort of thing would enjoy it, and people who enjoy a moral story.

What's Virgin Mean

What Was Good?
I think that one of the best aspects of the short is the humour behind it all. It has a slight awkwardness behind it, which the mother in the film shares as she describes it to the young girl. The humour is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the film. I think the way it was carried out with the mother cooking is clever, as she seems to be cooking what well represents what she's talking about.

What Appealed to the Audience?
The awkward humour is the thing drawing everybody in. It is a little like, it happens stereotypically to all parents, so revealing it in a humour way is attractive to viewers. It is interesting and eventful, which would definitely draw in the target audience.

What is the Target Audience?
People with a kind of humour that thrives in awkward moments. I also think people who may watch this may be interested in watching people try and wiggle out of awkward situations none of us want to be in, which adds to the humour because we are, in a way, laughing at someone's misfortune, because they're in a situation we don't want to be in.
